Beat the Heat: Cooling Tips & Summer Foods for Your Pup ☀️🐾

Holy cow, it’s been hot here in Ohio—and honestly, across most of the country! I'm not complaining, though!  I'll take summer heat over winter temps anytime!

Juggling walks for the pups has been a race against the sun to beat the heat. I’ve been heading out early, water bottle in hand, and sticking to grassy paths to protect sensitive paws. Especially for the two big, black-coated dogs I walk with—they overheat almost instantly!

Even with shorter walks and shaded routes, it’s clear our dogs feel the heat just as much—if not more—than we do. So I started thinking: what else can I do to help them stay cool and comfortable?

That’s when I pulled out one of my favorite tools: my Food Energetics chart that my veterinarian provided.

If you’re not familiar, it’s a helpful guide that categorizes foods as cooling, neutral, or warming based on their effect on the body’s internal energy.

Since I cook for my crew, I love using this chart to adjust their meals with the seasons. In the winter, warming foods are great. But in the heat of summer, cooling foods can help regulate their internal temperature and keep them from overheating.

Here are a few ingredients to consider adding.

🥬 Fruits & Veggies:

Bananas, Cucumbers, Pear, Kale, Celery, Collard Greens, Blueberries, and Brussels Sprouts

🐟 Proteins:

Cod, Rabbit, Turkey, Crab, Duck Egg and Scallop

These foods are naturally cooling and can help regulate your dog’s body temperature from the inside out. Always consult your veterinarian before making dietary changes, and be aware of any potential allergies.

Other Easy Ways to Keep Your Dog Cool

Walk early or late: Avoid peak sun hours (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

Hydration stations: Bring water on every walk and take frequent breaks

Stick to the shade & grass: Hot pavement can burn paws in seconds

Frozen treats: Blend cooling fruits like blueberries and banana with a little water or goat milk, pour into molds, and freeze!

Cooling mats or damp towels: Great for post-walk recovery naps

Limit high-energy play: Especially for flat-faced or dark-coated breeds

If your dog likes water, provide a kiddie pool

Summer should be full of tail wags, not heat drags. With a few smart food swaps and mindful routines, you can help your pup enjoy the season safely and happily.
